InClimate 561; Energy Exports

The big energy boom in the USA is driven by large deposits of oil and gas previously too difficult to harvest. Newer more dangerous methods like hydraulic fracturing have made the energy available. Fracking forces toxic chemicals, great amounts of precious freshwater and sand into the earth contaminating groundwater, causing earthquakes and releasing the potent greenhouse gas methane into the atmosphere. Where will the new American gas and oil go? It won’t help create US energy independence or lower prices at home as it heads to the international market where it goes to the highest bidder. Burning fossil fuel exacerbates climate change wherever in the world it is used.

Dominion Energy has already received conditional approval to build a terminal 50 miles south of Washington D.C. at Cove Point, Lusby, MD to export American gas. The Federal Energy Regulations Committee is considering proposals for 14 other gas terminals. It’s big money and secret handshakes that slow pathways to clean and renewable energy and prolong a dependence on the bound to become obsolete fossil fuel. People are angry. People are protesting.
