InClimate 569; Censorship & Oil Greed

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa passed a Draconian Communications Law quashing the free press. The new law mandates fines and jail time for journalists that are deemed biased against the government. The editor of the independent newspaper “Hoy” had already received a prison sentence and the paper was facing huge fines before it was recently shuttered. Greed and big oil played their role. The people were led to believe the Correa administration was seeking alternatives to drilling in a protected rain forest, while the British paper “The Guardian” reported an end run. The government had been planning the move under raps. Only the foreign press - difficult for average Ecuadorians to get a hold of - can report the corruption.
