InClimate 624; Energy's Toll on Birds

There is no free lunch. Critics of solar and wind power - often with fossil fuel agendas - sometimes point to the threat to birds from renewable energy facilities. They conveniently fail to include the death toll comparisons from their favored power sources. The US News blog published a rundown on the estimated yearly avian death toll from energy production in the US.

The estimates put coal as the leading killer of birds followed by oil and gas. Nuclear comes in behind those three. Wind and then solar follow. They all have significant body counts, but solar and wind kill fewer birds than coal, gas & oil and nuclear energy.
