InClimate 632; Flood Arrests & Bungled News

So, why am I still spending time and energy writing, talking, thinking, performing and marching about human activity and climate change? It’s something most reasonable people have by this moment in time found to be obvious. Monday’s “New York Post” coverage included a side bar by Sophia Rosenbaum that accused marchers of being hypocrites because trash cans were overflowing after over 300,000 people passed by. Trash cans overflowing? Have you ever been to New York? Of course, there was also the concern about all the buses that came in - buses, not the most comfortable, but a fairly efficient way to move people around - and the congested traffic, but again - have you been to New York?

Then, there is also the bungled news coverage for the largest climate action in history with 2,646 events in 156 countries world wide. And finally, some very important policy makers in America are still insisting climate change is up for  discussion even though the world body of scientists overwhelming agrees that Climate Change is real. The discussion is long over. The US House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space and Technology held hearings that proved there was very little understanding of science on the committee. Don’t take my word for it. Watch them on cable or better yet watch John Stewart lampoon them on the Daily Show. These are policy wonks that make rules that impact all of us.

The Flood Wall Street protest was in response to the financial capitals role in perpetrating climate change. People were asked to wear blue to symbolize flood waters rising while they occupied Wall Street. It began at 9 a.m. in Battery Park with speakers and then moved into the financial district. The organizers put the numbers as high as 3,000 demonstrators in the street at its peak. It was obvious the police were re-routing traffic to avoid confrontations. We decided to move on to another rally nearer the UN and left before 104 protesters were arrested.  There were some exchanges earlier, but the police pretty much left people alone and routed traffic around them until about 7:45 p.m. when they formally asked them to disperse. Some left; some stayed and according to witnesses orderly arrests followed. Sadly, the Peoples Climate March “polar bear” was busted.
