InClimate 675; Don't Mourn; Organize

It’s been well-established that transitioning from fossil fuel is the fast track to mitigating climate disruptions. The big coal, oil and gas industries know that, but they have never been good stewards of the planet and realize they are in a fight to save astronomical profits from common sense, science and environmentalists. They pumped hundreds of millions into ads and twisted information campaigns to support oily policy makers with great results on election night.

Don’t give up the ship. Grass roots organizing, local legislation, legal maneuvers, disseminating the climate facts and hitting the industry in the pocket-book have all proven successful in the good fight. Since 2012, more than 140 institutions representing over $50 billion have committed to divesting investments from the fossil fuel industry. The New York State Supreme Court ruled that towns can use local ordinances to ban hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas. Denton, TX and two counties in California banned fracking with local ballot initiatives. In Wisconsin, two townships are suing a city for annexing a distant frac sand mine because of the sweet deal that would let it operate under city zoning. Local opposition blocked the permits for the Keystone-XL pipeline to run through Nebraska and South Dakota. Climate marchers around the world and 400,000 in New York City on September 21st demanded action on climate from policy makers. Don’t mourn; organize.
