InClimate 676; Melting Galciers Cost Money

Climate change’s melting glaciers will cost money. In Peru, where the glaciers have melted by about 40% over the last 40 years the nation’s water authority predicts the remaining glaciers could disappear entirely in just a few more years. The loss would put pressure on freshwater supplies and knock-out the hydropower industry that provides much of the country’s electrical power. Rajendra K. Pachauri, the chair of the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, puts the price tag on power loss due to melting glaciers at between $212 million and $1.5 billion.
