InClimate 686; Sao Paulo Dries Up?

In another climate related story and case of "all things connect to all things", South America’s largest city, Sao Paulo, Brazil, is running out of water primarily due to human activity. Twenty million residents are getting-by through austere water rationing. The region is in a record drought. Dry season has followed dry season and left the city’s reservoirs at only 10% of capacity. The conditions can be directly linked to the deforestation of the Amazon and Atlantic Forest. Scientists know that rain-forest vapor produces the clouds that have historically floated inland to settle on Sao Paulo and provide welcome rains. As the forests have been decimated, the rains have disappeared.

Climatologist Antonio Nobre was quoted in “The Week” as saying, “If deforestation in the Amazon continues, Sao Paulo will probably dry up.”
