InClimate 701; A Feel-Good Cloud

Buy what you need, but don’t empty out the store. Cyber Monday has grown to a cyber week for some retailers. Consumption and over-consumption is still just that even when it’s handled through cyberspace. The “cloud” is not a cloud - it’s a feel-good name for vast arrays of servers in climate controlled environments that use plenty of energy. The products still need to be shipped. The internet is great and handy, but... “there’s no free lunch” still applies.

From August 12, 2013 (InClimate 224): The scale of the internet and its “cloud” is growing exponentially. There are approximately 10 billion devices connected to the public cloud and the data centers that serve them. According to HP if that were a nation, “it would rank fifth in electricity consumption. Reducing that number by even 50% would save the equivalent of the electricity consumption of the United Kingdom.”
