InClimate 709; Apache Land to MultiNationals

Big chiefs in Washington still want to give-away Indian lands. The House and Senate Armed Services Committee attached a provision to the National Defense Authorization Act that would give 2,400 acres of Apache burial, medicinal and ceremonial grounds in Arizona’s Tonto National Forest to a foreign owned mining operation. The news of the “deal” was on page 1,105. Not exactly sure what that has to do with national defense, but since the measure was attached to annual legislation to fund the Defense Department and the multinationals assure a positive economic impact - it will probably slide right through.

The main player, Resolution Copper, is a subsidiary of BHP Billiton and the Australian-English mining company Rio Tinto which co-owns with Iran an African uranium mine which is 10% owned by China. It’s still all about the money. Rio Tinto claims the mining would generate $61 billion in economic activity and 3,700 jobs over 40 years.
