InClimate 773; Copenhagen Blue & Green

Climate change preparedness can be an opportunity for city beautification. In Denmark, greenery is replacing hard surfaces to make way for rising waters. A catastrophic cloudburst over the Copenhagen neighborhood St. Kjeld’s in 2011 caused about $1 billion in damages. The water was a problem as it overwhelmed drainage. City planners had to act. Enlarging sewers is expensive so they developed a green and blue - vegetation and water - rainwater master plan. Asphalt in the old squares was torn up and replaced by hilly grassy surfaces with walking paths, cloud boulevards and bowl-shaped parks. Roof top gardens and roof drainage completed the plan. Residents welcomed the changes and the idea is set to expand to other neighborhoods in the capital city.
