The Obama administration instituted a plan to reduce 5 greenhouse gasses from power plant and factory emissions by putting them under the same guidelines imposed on automobiles. It’s one of the main reasons heavily polluting coal fired power plants have been shutting down or converting to natural gas. Special interests have challenged whether the Environmental Protection Agency is over stepping its authority with the plan and the Supreme Court will debate and rule on the question in early 2014.
Congress has been slow at passing any climate legislation and the George W. Bush administration had resisted such moves, so the Obama administration moved forward with a little tightening of the 1970 Clean Air Act passed by that Congress and signed by then Republican President Richard M. Nixon. Proving clean air and health should be a bipartisan issue.
