Amphibians are having a rough time do to a number of things, but especially climate change and pesticide use. In a a nine year US Geological Survey study, scientists in 34 widespread locations across the US found 48 species of frogs, salamanders and toads declined from about 4 to 11.6 percent per year. The reductions were found in both protected and unprotected areas which gave evidence for the pesticide and climate link. Amphibians are thought to have survived the changing conditions on earth over millions of years, but having both a water and land based life cycle makes them especially susceptible to environmental factors and human activity may finally be there demise. Maybe they don’t seem that important, but they are a part of the food chain and the cycle of life - next time you scratch a mosquito bite - say a little prayer for the amphibians.
