Always remember our allies in the fight to mitigate climate disruption. Coal still powers much of the world’s electricity and is responsible for a major portion of carbon loading in the atmosphere. Besides that, it has a long rap sheet of other toxic pollutants and environmental degradation. It’s time has come and gone.
The Sierra Club began moving the US away from coal way back in 2002 with its Beyond Coal campaign. Since its inception, they have stopped 165 proposed coal-fired power plants from being constructed, secured retirement for another 100 commercial plants along with plans to retire 20 more that are campus-based. They brokered a huge clean air agreement by convincing the Tennessee Valley Authority to retire 18 coal-fired power plants. The Sierra Club has prevented over 611 million tons of carbon pollution from entering the atmosphere. They’ve gone after mountaintop removal coal mining - one of the most destructive forms of extraction - and have successfully stalled new permits.
The Sierra Club and other environmental allies have our backs and deserve support.
