The sixth annual Climate Change Vulnerability Index from the risk consultancy firm Maplecroft ranks 193 nations according to their capabilities of adapting to the effects of climate change. They looked at the nations likely exposure to extreme weather events, sensitivity of the population to the extremes and the resources to deal with all the problems.
Dhaka the capital of Bangladesh and Mumbai, India are most at risk. The US ranks fairly well at 158 - the coasts are vulnerable, but inland things seem better. China, while not at high risk, does not do as well and ranks 61 of the 193. Some of the nations that have already been preparing with ambitious energy and climate goal proposals will probably do the best.
The United Nations has formed a commission for a year-long study on the “economic benefits of taking action against climate change”. Perhaps the ill-advised climate deniers will wake-up to follow the money.
